I haven't watched it yet. Is the writing better than the art?
No. Uncle Grandpa acts like a character from a Nick Jr. cartoon (talking slowly and pronouncing everything) The pizza acts like a big shot exclusively and the Godzilla character somehow doesn't do anything.
To me its only purpose is to make kids slightly stupid. I'm not trying to be funny about that either; it feels like it supposed to make your brain mushy for 30 minutes or so you'll watch it long enough to see a commercial.

I wouldn't even call it a stoner show. Stoner shows usually have subtlety and colors, this is just...a monotone 30 minute hum of stupid.

I watched the premiere and thought it was okay. I didn't laugh at anything, but it seems like the show would grow on me if I watched some more episodes.

Let me start by saying I hate a lot of the humor this show makes use of. I don't hate the show, but I don't consider myself a fan of it either. These are just some observations I have made, having watched more than a few cartoons in my day. I'm going a little bit out of my way to play devil's advocate here, but I'll try not to say anything I don't think I can justify.Steven Universe looks almost equally exhausting and moronic as Uncle Grandpa. Regular Show is about the only thing watchable left on CN. I miss the cartoon networks of the mid 90s/early 2000s. Adult Swim and CN playing live action shows that I would describe as jokes, but that would imply there was anything humorous about them. Toonami has just gotten disappointing. I guess I'm glad it's back, but as a mere husk of it's former greatness. The Avatar series have to be the only thing keeping Nick afloat financially; which, sadly, probably isn't true considering humans will seemingly consume every bit of drivel that hits the market these days. In response to the opening post, I'd have to submit that many things today are around solely to promote mediocrity, ignorance, and complacency it would seem. These shows are clear signs of the degradation of modern society. Enjoy the spoils of our evolution before we destroy ourselves from the inside out; following in the footsteps of oblivious advanced civilizations passed.
We all miss the cartoons of the mid 90s to early 2000s. I am fairly certain that literally all of us who were around to see them do. As a regular cartoon network viewer and neglected child, I've seen plenty of shows come and go, good and bad. Lately I've taken to revisiting some of my favorite old series on boomerang, and on the web. Some of them stand the test of time, (Samurai Jack and PowerPuff Girls are my favorites) and can be appreciated by child and adult minds alike, while some shows cannot(depending on the individual). Cow and Chicken is one I remember fondly, but can no longer watch, due to its at times painfully dumb and slow sense of humor. Dexter's Lab wasn't that great either, it is over-hyped at the very least, though I still love remembering it.
Uncle Grandpa is no worse than Cow and Chicken at least from what I've watched of both recently. Does that make it good? Eh... honestly it caught me off guard more than once when I first started watching it. Once you see a few episodes and start to understand how it is written it becomes somewhat more predictable, but it's still good for a chuckle every now and then. Perhaps it doesn't measure up to the greats back in our day, but I hardly consider Uncle Grandpa one of the current greats, its just a nice change of pace from the awful fake reality shows.
I certainly don't think Uncle Grandpa is making anyone any smarter, but as for actually making people retarded... maybe in the sense that children would probably be better for doing their homework than watching it, but that is true of nearly every cartoon. Otherwise, I think there is a thin line between retardation and whimsy, and while the show may draw close to the line I don't think it oversteps it too often. Even when the general plot is garbage, I find myself chuckling in surprise sometimes, and I like anything that stimulates creativity and imagination. After all, if Toonami taught me anything it is this:
"A boy has a right to dream..."
Damn those bumps are nostalgic.
I think the statement about "many things" being around to promote "mediocrity, ignorance, and complacence," is a little dramatic. I would agree with you if we were talking about the church, but children's cartoons? I could understand mediocrity, because there are a lot of mediocre cartoons out there, but the cartoons aren't promoting it, they want to be good; they're just made by jaded producers trying to make a buck. Several recent shows, however, have pushed the bar for cartoons, and we're starting to see new styles of animation emerging. After seeing things drawn generally the same for so many years, I actually find that refreshing and innovative, rather than mediocre, even if the cartoons don't always deliver. Promoting ignorance? In one sense, that's what cartoons do; they offer distractions. On the other hand, though it may be slight or subtle, a lot of cartoons are at least a little educational. Kid's networks like to be able to slap that on the side of shows. Even if they don't outright teach you something, they can reference something interesting and inspire the viewer to do further research on said topic to satisfy his own curiosity. Then there's complacence. I don't know if you mean cartoons keep kids complacently buying toys like sheep, which more than a few do, or if they allow their poor parents a moments rest, (while I don't condone electronic baby-sitters... hey, I turned out alright, right?) or if you just wanted to use a ten dollar word there.
Truth be told, I expect the latter. I hope I'm not offending you, but you remind me of myself when I was younger. Some friendly advise from me to you is not to elevate yourself too far above the common blithering idiot, it gets lonely up on the pedestal. That and people tend to think you're smarter if you speak simply. That said, I know the fall of the ancient roman empire was fore-shadowed by the terrible decline in the quality of ancient roman cartoons, but I think we'll manage somehow.
Uncle Grandpa hasn't always kept me entertained, but I have not once scooped my eyes out watching it, and I think it and Gumball make fantastic nonsense shows akin to Cow and Chicken. I am comfortable with Regular Show and Adventure Time, though I haven't seen either in a while; they don't excite me nearly as much as when they first came out, and I've seen a few rare misses, but I still regard them more highly than Johny Test, or Total Drama Anything. I find Steven Universe incredibly charming, and can't wait to see where they go with it, and for the first time in a long time, I'm excited about cartoon network's future.
Whether you like or hate the new shows, you can't deny that they are different, they feel different. Cartoon network is changing, slowly but surely. That could be wonderful or terrible,(though for the past few years it seemed hard to imagine them getting worse.) depending on your tastes, but I have been impressed with some of the risks they have taken recently. While Uncle Grandpa feels a little dull and stiff at times, it shares a similar feel to other highly acclaimed shows, and isn't completely terrible by it's own merit. I consider it a misguided step in the right direction (away from those crappy old Canadian cartoons(Not to be confused with good Canadian Cartoons...))

As for CN, I'm astounded by how much better it's gotten after (shiver) CNReal (which is ridiculous that they thought that was a good idea, no one goes to a channel NAMED for its cartoons to watch real life) . Clarence, though it looks dumb, it has sort of a childish charm, and I like it a lot, just because it's so naive and cute. Adventure Time and Regular Show are pretty good I guess, I've never been huge on them, but I get why other people like them. Teen Titans Go is a horrible shame to the original show, We Bare Bears is nice, but not outstanding, and Be Cool, Scooby Doo and The Amazing World of Gumball are both very funny.
As for Steven Universe, that is the single greatest piece of televised art and story I have ever seen. It's beyond gorgeous, its character building is astounding, its world building is stellar, its music is incredible, and I have been completely spoiled by it. Seriously, I can't watch anything else without thinking, "I wish I was watching SU right now." The only other show I feel this way with is Gravity Falls.
It's a nice time to be a cartoon lover, but there are some things you wish you could unsee, like Miss Simian's rear end. Uncle Grandpa is one of those things.
